WEAKNESSES: Because of her past, she has severe trust issues around men. Older ones will be mostly seen as untrustworthy and she dislikes having to spend time with them. However, younger ones are still pliable! She goes a bit Miss Havishman on them, and sees them as people to be hurt and punished for her pain. She’s not as severe about it, however, and expresses her dislike for most males simply by gossiping about them and frowning at them as she denies them access to her onsen. She doesn’t like depending on anyone but herself and the possible close friends she makes, which can sometimes make things needlessly difficult for her and needlessly frustrating for the people that do care for her.

STRENGTHS: Hesitant as she is to rely on anyone but her own strength, it’s made her quite an self-accomplished and self-assured woman, both business-wise and privately. She won’t let anyone shove her around or make her do things she doesn’t want to do. Despite this strong sense of self, she knows how to act appropriately in situations that are beyond her control… she just chooses to avoid these situations as best as she possibly can. Despite that, she’s quite passive in the things that befall her, either good or bad, and just chooses to let it come her way, and knows that whatever it is, she’ll be able to handle it.

PERSONALITY: Ayumi’s the kind of person that you’re terrified of disappointing. She seems aware of the world, has a taste for the finer things in life, and seems not at all inclined to a smile, or, when she does, it seems more business-friendly than anything. Most of the time, she’s not really stern however, she just knows what she wants and wants to get them done. She takes the time for these things, though, expecting nothing short of perfection of herself… and other people.

Business-minded as she is, she does have trouble opening up to people. She is perfectly kind and hospitable to people because her job demands her that she is, but rarely does she genuinely open up to people and give them an honest smile. In turn, she depends mostly on her own resources, and can be pretty unreachable emotionally. She doesn’t let things get to her, and has learned through her life to take things as they come, and she will survive because of her own inner strength.

However unreachable she is, one thing that makes her job so enjoyable for her is that she can gossip about customers… to other customers. It’s her subtle way of having fun, as she’s not the type of person to go wild and have parties, or anything really socially intimate. Most of the time, she just does it to obtain more information. It’s a certain pattern that slips in when having had the experience she’s had, and she finds it hard to get rid of it and she doesn’t see why she should bother, considering people fidgeting in front of her amuses her as well as empowers her. Before, nobody would even bother thinking of her as a threat.

Due to her past, she also has a weird schism between the physical and emotional. She has absolutely no interest in returning to her profession, even though she did not find it as scarring as some of the acquaintances she made in her life. She has no interest in emotional ties, thinking that people will leave soon enough and it’s pointless and just a hassle to care for them. Likewise, she feels that sex and emotional attachment have never been a combination for her she has to worry about.

BACKGROUND: Ayumi was born in a middle-class family, a family where there was much pressure on marrying her off to a rich family so they could grow in status. Her childhood wasn’t quite as lonely as it sounds, but it was far from being a warm, cuddly existence. Her parents were overjoyed at her proper grades and noticeable appearance, which they hoped would attract the eye of many a rich man.

Despite catching the attention of many suitors, she was not particularly interested in romance, far more interested in building her own life for herself, but she knew it would put her parents in an impossible position. So she picked an older businessman, someone who could give her family the means to improve socially, and someone who would be old enough not to demand a lot of sex and who could provide for her and her family alike.

Fujiwara Tomi agreed to take her as a wife, liking her independent nature as it was a breath of relief after having gone through three wives already. He placed her in a high-class apartment complex of his own name and made sure all her monetary desires were met. He provided her with expensive clothes and his name, making sure everyone in the building knew she was not to be messed with.

Before she knew it, Ayumi was basically a prostitute with the title of wife. She didn’t like it because it trapped her in the small life that made her Tomi’s wife as opposed to her own person making her own life. However, she acquiesced, ever pragmatic. Instead, she just chose to find some other productive way to spend her time, finding solace in culturally appropriate tasks for a high-class wife, such as Ikebana and tea ceremonies. She became the perfect host wife, learning how to deal with all sorts of high-class business people, the people who occupied themselves with the tasks she wanted to perform, but did it with a smile on her face.

That was, until Tomi died. Ayumi thought that she could finally follow her own life now, having secured enough money and a name for her family to be linked to to no longer be under the obligation of being married off. However, she’d not calculated Tomi’s business partners taking a liking to her as well. As it turned out, the building was a high-class sort of storage for the high-class concubines, mistresses… and there was a certain understanding that when you started living in this building, you couldn’t get out unless you took your own life. The shame of leaving such a place would be too great, and her family would be dishonored and probably punished for raising her daughter to flee such a place.

So, Ayumi remained living there, taking hosts and arranging business meetings for other men. However horrible she thought her life, she felt obliged to remain, already soiled by the men that used her. She grew accustomed to it, used to denying herself of what she wanted to what other people wanted of her, and knowing she was strong enough to handle it, unlike other ‘tenants’ in the building. The average of suicides was around two a month, but their apartments would soon be filled again.

She stayed in that profession, in that apartment for about a decade. Secretly, she’d begun saving some money anywhere she could hide it, so long as it wasn’t apparent from her credits that she was withdrawing a lot of money. She was planning her escape. She’d found out that her parents knew of her situation, and were actually in contact with the company of her late husband, who kept it running as it was. Now she no longer felt any moral obligation to protect her parents, who were more on the Fujiwara family’s side than her own and thus would probably be protected anyhow, so she left for greener pastures.

WHY IS YOUR CHARACTER HERE?: Ayumi is here to find the freedom she’d never had before. A relatively small place like Iwatodai, with people who did not know her life before an Okami-san. She wants somewhere she can start fresh, without everyone who sees her in her telltale garments knowing she used to be a high-class prostitute. She’s still afraid of being visited by the company of her late husband, but knows that if she keeps her onsen with her husband’s name on it, people won’t dare to interfere because it’ll reflect poorly on the company, and the respected family itself.
